People living in Northamptonshire have been warned to beware of bogus telephone callers who claim to be from the Northamptonshire County Council.

The authority has reported receiving complaints from several people who say they have been contacted by cold callers offering loft and wall cavity insulation under the auspices of Northamptonshire County Council.

In some cases, residents who complained said the caller became rude and aggressive during the conversation.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire County Council said the authority did not offer a loft and wall cavity insulation service.

She stressed these types of calls would not be from council staff and advised residents not to give out personal information or act on offers from those or other similar callers.  Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage (Con, East Hunsbury), cabinet member for customers and communities, reiterated her words. He said: "These calls are not being made by the county council and we do not offer any loft or wall insulation services."

He warned: "During these tough economic times it is likely more of these types of scams will appear so it is important residents are on their guard and stop and think before agreeing to anything."  Councillor de Savage said the bogus calls had been referred to the council's trading standards department.

He appealed to members of the public targeted by such scams to help bring the perpetrators to justice.

He said: "Where possible it would be helpful for consumers to ask for the name of the person calling and also a phone number - without giving any of their personal details or agreeing to a visit of course - as this will help trading standards in their investigation."

While trading standards carry out their investigations people with concerns can get advice by contacting the team or calling Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

The village Fete and Dog Show was a great success. A very enjoyable day was had by all,and the fantastic sum of £1523.05 was raised, which is an amazing achievement.

Many thanks to all the sponsers and volunteers whose support allowed the day to happen.

Many thanks also to all who attended to support this event.

Harry Love

A Mind For Murder

Daphne E Machon’s new novel, “Harry Love : A Mind For Murder”, is being published in time for Christmas.

This is the fourth Harry Love book, and is being formally launched at Waterstone’s Book Shop, The Square, Market Harborough on Friday December 18th from 6pm to 8pm.

Things are running smoothly at Torreston Police Station, especially for DCI Harriet Love, who is beginning to enjoy the company of DI Ed Harrington. But their relationship goes on hold when a woman is found dead in the park, and a second murder is deemed to be connected. TheTeam set about finding the link between the two dead women and turn their investigation to the local comprehensive school, where one was a student and the other a teacher. When a third body is found, no link can be discovered to the first murders and Harry, Ed and DS Charlie Marlow once again find themselves involved in a hunt for a killer.

Village Fayre

Despite the unlucky weather this year, the Fete on 1st August 2009 again proved to be extremely popular with a  profit of £1,159.92 being raised for the Church and Village Hall. This amounts to a sizeable increase on the profit made in 2008. Given the circumstances this was a very satisfactory result.

A large number of people gave their time, effort and produce to make this event successful. We would like to express our particular appreciation to Chloe and Reggie for inviting us to use their garden as a spectacular setting, to Phil and Andy for the music and PA system (although playing tracks about summer sunshine in the middle of a downpour was a little ironic!), to Jane for her MC prowess, to the Fundraising Committee for the six months of planning involved, and finally to all of you who helped in any way. Without your dedication and enthusiasm we would not be able to run events such as this. THANK YOU ALL.

We would also like to say a special “thank you” to our many sponsors in Market Harborough and the local community, who donated vouchers and prizes for the Raffle, thereby making it one of the highlights of the afternoon. The first prize of £100 was won by Stephen Anthony. Congratulations!

One Enchanted Evening

One Enchanted Evening by David Kent was a great success; a fun and relaxing evening.

David’s singing and enthusiasm were most enjoyable.

After paying for our entertainment (David) the balance of £195 will be split between the Church and Village Hall. A massive thank you to everyone who helped sell tickets, made canapés, donated raffle prizes and wine and came along to fill the Church. And not forgetting David – thanks for a really great evening!

Bonfire and Fireworks Display

7th November at the Polo Field

This enjoyable event has been deemed very successful with much favourable feedback from attendees. It is good to report that this non-profit making event managed to make a slight surplus which is being used to ensure successful future firework displays.

Thank you to all who helped to make the evening a success and as ever, special thanks go to the Handy families for the use of their facilities and their unstinting efforts in organising and running the event.

Art Exhibition

6th to 8th November

This year’s exhibition was a great success. Even in tough economic times, the exhibition proved popular for those seeking a unique Christmas gift either for friends or for themselves! Visitors were very generous with donations this year.

The event made a profit of approximately £200 which will be split between the church and the village hall. Thanks go to the Arthingworth Fund Raising Committee for their hard work in organising the event, with special thanks to Lesley Sanderson and Ellie Handy. Thanks also to Colin for assisting in setting up the display frames, Mary garbutt for the use of St. Andrew’s church, all who manned the exhibition over the weekend and last but not least the local artists who made the exhibition possible.

We always welcome new artists to the exhibition. Next year’s event will be held on 12-14 November 2010.

Results of Sponsored Bike Ride for Northamptonshire Churches

Mike Hulme, Charles Irving-Swift, Malcolm and Anne Rowe and Sarah Peppiatt would like to thank everybody who sponsored them on this year’s Bike Ride on September 12th, in aid of Northamptonshire churches. Owing to the generous support of family, villagers and other friends, the team of intrepid cyclists, sporting a wide variety of equipment and clothing (some more contemporary than others…) managed to raise almost £270, half of which will be donated to St. Andrew’s, Arthingworth. The rest, in accordance with the terms of the event, will be used to support building work on other churches in the county. Cycling conditions on the day were perfect, which made the outing all the more enjoyable. Many thanks to all those sponsors for making this year’s Ride an unqualified success.

Arthingworth Fund Raising Committee

The Arthingworth Fund Raising Committee is reforming as a Registered Charity and as part of this process is adopting a new constitution.  All residents of Arthingworth over the age of 18 years will be eligible to be members (no subscription involved).  The new constitution will be available on the Arthingworth web site in the near future or can be obtained from John Maybank (johnmaybank@yahoo.com).

Please note the Parish Council is kindly funding the cost charged by the host of this website for the first year.

I would just like to express my (and the village’s) thanks for their support!

The Parish Council’s full statement is as follows:

At a meeting of Arthingworth Parish Council on 3rd November 2009 it was unanimously agreed that the Council would support the new Arthingworth web site by funding the first years subscription.  Chairman David Newton stated that it was an ideal vehicle to keep villagers informed of events and indeed circulate information from the Parish Council meetings.

Bulls Head Fund Raising

Once again we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Kevin and Sandy of The Bull’s Head for their continued support by raising funds throughout the year and kindly donating £545.70 which was presented to the Village Hall on Monday 28th December 2009.

Funds are raised throughout the year by way of the Bonus Ball, Raffles, Casino Night, Quiz Nights, Christmas Card Post Box and Book Exchange, and this year the “Arthingworth Choir” raised a massive £220 towards the final total.

Many thanks to the Bull’s Head Customers and Villagers for their support of all these fund raising events.

Would you like to get more involved with helping to keep a vital Village Amenity running smoothly?

All Arthingworth Villagers are welcome to join the Village Hall Committee and we would greatly appreciate your participation.

If you would be interested in joining, please call Angie Morse on 01858 525589 (07710 503448)

Arthingworth Cinema

The second film showing, ‘Saving Grace’, held on 21 May raised some £115.

The next showing, ‘It’s Complicated’, is to be held on Friday 9 July in the Village Hall, doors open 7.30 pm.  Please note this is a new date and film.  As ever, tickets available from: Tim (07824435245); Penny (525572) or The Bull’s Head.

Would you like to learn how to play Cribbage?

We have two very “talented” crib teams in the local league and in 2009 the B Team, consisting of Captain Eric Stevens, Linda Handy, Penny Maybank, Dave Sullivan and Paul and Fiona White, with a few reserves, won the Association Knockout Cup and their winning shield takes price of place in the bar.

However, interest in learning the game has been expressed by some non-team members and it has been decided to hold a friendly in-house league on Monday evenings with a view to taking time to teach non-players the rules of the game.  Anybody who is interested is welcome to come along about 7.30 pm on any Monday until the end of March when the official league re-starts for the summer and new team members will be selected.

Basics Shop

We will shortly be opening a “village store” stocking basic items.  Further details, including a price list,  will be circulated to each household in the village within a few weeks.

Forthcoming Events

Seed & plant swap shop

Too many half packets of seeds from last year?  All of your seedlings last year grew and you were left with too many and no heart to bin them? Fear not! The Fund Raising Committee has decided to hold a Seed & Plant Swap Shop at the Village Hall on Sat 1st May in the spirit of building our gardening community and sharing tips and ideas. It is also hoped that we may encourage even more entries into the Home Produce Competition!

The idea will be to bring along any unwanted half / full packets of seeds (in date) or your excess of grown seedlings and swap them for something you need. For those with nothing to swap, but still wanting to have a go at growing, there will be the chance to buy instead. Whilst we’re all swapping and buying there will be the chance to enjoy a cup of tea / coffee and piece of cake while tips and ideas are swapped as well. Any proceeds will be raised for the Village Hall and Arthingworth Church.

Further information will be detailed at a later date, so if you’ve got anything spare remember to keep hold of it until May 1st!

Hedges and Trees in the Parish

Some areas of the village are proving difficult to mow due to overhanging trees and hedges that need trimming back.

Can villagers please take care of their boundaries?

The Parish Council will follow this up on an individual basis should work not be carried out.

Dog Owners
It has been noted that dogs are still fouling the paths within the village despite there being TWO dog bins installed to combat this problem.

ALL dog owners are requested to clear up after their pets.  BAG IT AND BIN IT.

Dog owners are also reminded to ensure their animals are under control at all times and not left to wander the village.

Messages from Northamptonshire West Police

There has been an increase in the number of people receiving unsolicited telephone calls from companies offering the installation of security systems.

Initial contact is made by telephone cold calling residents to arrange appointments. Whilst the alarms may be free or available at a nominal cost, the ongoing maintenance costs are high and there is a cancellation fee.

We advise that you do not purchase systems from companies cold calling, either on the telephone or at your door. If you are considering investing in an alarm system, we recommend that obtain quotes from at least 3 security companies who are subject to independent inspection by a recognised body, either NSI (The National Security Inspectorate) or SSAIB (Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board).

Anyone experiencing or have been affected by 'cold call' telephone calls in relation to appointments arranging visits promoting the sale of security alarms should ring Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or Northamptonshire Trading Standards on 01604 707900.

We would like to remind you, 'If you're not sure, DON'T open the door'.

If you are concerned about a caller at your door or suspect that distraction burglars or rogue doorstep traders are operating in your community, please call our dedicated Doorstep crime Action Network (DAN) number 0345 23 07 702. You can read about the tactics these criminals use at www.northants.police.uk/lookout
