The Village Seniors Christmas lunch party, held 1st December, proved once again to be an enjoyable event, with the general consensus being “good food, good company and ambience”.
Our on-going fund-raising in 2010, due to weekly bonus ball numbers, monthly quizzes, Christmas raffle, race night, book sales, breakfast & papers mornings and donations, amounted to almost £1500 – not too bad for a small village pub! This has been distributed between Cransley Hospice, Arthingworth Fund Raising Committee, St. Andrew’s Church, & Arthingworth village hall as well as the Seniors Christmas Lunches. Many thanks to all who contributed to any or all of the above, particularly those who have regular bonus ball numbers. Despite Sandy’s “gentle reminders” to pay up (usually followed by comments such as “you’re always after my money”) we think you will agree it is all worthwhile when you see just where the money goes.
The very successful Casino Night & Disco is being repeated on Friday, 11th February at 7.30 pm. Tickets are £15 pp which includes canapes and £100 worth of chips, and black tie is optional. The previous event saw some very sophisticated outfits – and that was just the men! Book your tickets now!
Future dates for your diary:
April 22nd (Good Friday): RACE NIGHT
April 29th – May 2nd: Royal Wedding Mini Beer Festival Weekend with “Stars in your Eyes”
Finally, Kevin & Sandy would like to wish all their friends and customers in and around Arthingworth a very healthy and happy 2011.
It is with much regret that we must have the 5 trees that welcome you to our Church cut down and removed. They have been infected with ‘brown aphid’ disease and are now either dead or dying and will not recover.
This work is due to start soon and for a few years the view of the Church will be very different.
We will be replacing the trees with yews and anyone interested in sponsoring a tree, or indeed have any questions, should contact Penny (525572) or Linda (525243) for information.
Would you like to learn how to play Cribbage?
We have two very “talented” crib teams in the local league and in 2009 the B Team, consisting of Captain Eric Stevens, Linda Handy, Penny Maybank, Dave Sullivan and Paul and Fiona White, with a few reserves, won the Association Knockout Cup and their winning shield takes price of place in the bar.
However, interest in learning the game has been expressed by some non-team members and it has been decided to hold a friendly in-house league on Monday evenings with a view to taking time to teach non-players the rules of the game. Anybody who is interested is welcome to come along about 7.30 pm on any Monday until the end of March when the official league re-starts for the summer and new team members will be selected.
Please note the Parish Council is kindly funding the cost charged by the host of this website for the first year.
I would just like to express my (and the village’s) thanks for their support!
The Parish Council’s full statement is as follows:
At a meeting of Arthingworth Parish Council on 3rd November 2009 it was unanimously agreed that the Council would support the new Arthingworth web site by funding the first years subscription. Chairman David Newton stated that it was an ideal vehicle to keep villagers informed of events and indeed circulate information from the Parish Council meetings.
A request from Derek Blunt
I am trying to find out information about the memorial to Mrs. Jekyll in the church.

“Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people live full and independent lives.”
Great British Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 20th May 2011
Want to do something different? Want to raise money where you live or work? Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 20th May 2011 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s information and support services.
You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 7 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £35.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
Last year we had over 100 suppers taking part in England and Wales and we raised £6,000. In 2011 we want to double that figure and ensure we can provide more support to spinal cord injured people.
The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to lead independent lives.
Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Officer, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.
Be a part of something special and make a real difference to help spinal cord injured people gain access to the information and support they need to enable them to live full and independent lives.”
For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 678 6633 xtn 229 or email fishandchips@spinal.co.uk or visit www.spinal.co.uk
Arthingworth Children’s Christmas Party at the Village Hall
Some 16 children attended this annual party – a good time was had by all. As ever, many thanks to all the hardworking ladies (yes, as ever, again they were women) for making it such an enjoyable time for the children of the village.

Hedges and Trees in the Parish
Some areas of the village are proving difficult to mow due to overhanging trees and hedges that need trimming back.
Can villagers please take care of their boundaries?
The Parish Council will follow this up on an individual basis should work not be carried out.
Pantomime
The pantomime, “Beauty and the Beast”, performed on 15 December was deemed a great success by the audience made up of all ages. It is planned to make the Christmas pantomime an annual event.
Dog Owners
It has been noted that dogs are still fouling the paths within the village
despite there being TWO dog bins installed to combat this problem.
ALL dog owners are requested to clear up after their pets. BAG IT AND BIN IT.
Dog owners are also reminded to ensure their animals are under control at all times and not left to wander the village.
Please can you ensure that your car, garage and outhouses are locked .
There have been reports from our local PCSO that there have been night-time prowlers who have accessed unlocked cars and garages
This activity will take place as from 9am on Saturday 20 November. The aim is to complete all the preparatory work, paint as much as possible and to clear the outside shed.
Any painting not completed on 20 November will be scheduled to be finished by 04 December.
All volunteers welcome! Whilst some materials will be provided please bring spare paint you have available.
There has been an increase in the number of people receiving unsolicited telephone
calls from companies offering the installation of security systems.
Initial contact
is made by telephone cold calling residents to arrange appointments. Whilst the alarms
may be free or available at a nominal cost, the ongoing maintenance costs are high
and there is a cancellation fee.
We advise that you do not purchase systems from companies
cold calling, either on the telephone or at your door. If you are considering investing
in an alarm system, we recommend that obtain quotes from at least 3 security companies
who are subject to independent inspection by a recognised body, either NSI (The National
Security Inspectorate) or SSAIB (Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board).
Anyone
experiencing or have been affected by 'cold call' telephone calls in relation to
appointments arranging visits promoting the sale of security alarms should ring Consumer
Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or Northamptonshire Trading Standards on 01604 707900.
We
would like to remind you, 'If you're not sure, DON'T open the door'.
If you are concerned
about a caller at your door or suspect that distraction burglars or rogue doorstep
traders are operating in your community, please call our dedicated Doorstep crime
Action Network (DAN) number 0345 23 07 702. You can read about the tactics these
criminals use at www.northants.police.uk/lookout

People living in Northamptonshire have been warned to beware of bogus telephone callers who claim to be from the Northamptonshire County Council.
The authority has reported receiving complaints from several people who say they have been contacted by cold callers offering loft and wall cavity insulation under the auspices of Northamptonshire County Council.
In some cases, residents who complained said the caller became rude and aggressive during the conversation.
A spokesperson for Northamptonshire County Council said the authority did not offer a loft and wall cavity insulation service.
She stressed these types of calls would not be from council staff and advised residents not to give out personal information or act on offers from those or other similar callers. Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage (Con, East Hunsbury), cabinet member for customers and communities, reiterated her words. He said: "These calls are not being made by the county council and we do not offer any loft or wall insulation services."
He warned: "During these tough economic times it is likely more of these types of scams will appear so it is important residents are on their guard and stop and think before agreeing to anything." Councillor de Savage said the bogus calls had been referred to the council's trading standards department.
He appealed to members of the public targeted by such scams to help bring the perpetrators to justice.
He said: "Where possible it would be helpful for consumers to ask for the name of the person calling and also a phone number - without giving any of their personal details or agreeing to a visit of course - as this will help trading standards in their investigation."
While trading standards carry out their investigations people with concerns can get advice by contacting the team or calling Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
